Over the past few months, I’ve been more and more interested in not only streamlining my everyday makeup but actually overhauling my makeup collection and beginning to replace my usual options with natural or chemical free alternatives. This shift towards natural and green beauty clearly isn’t just something that has captured my interest, because it’s turned out to be one of the things that I get the most questions about, particularly on my Instagram account. One of the things I get asked most often is about my natural everyday makeup routine.
So I thought I would take you through my everyday makeup look right now which is made up of all natural products that I absolutely love and would highly recommend all of them to you. One of the most important things I find helps with making your makeup look good is a great skincare routine. I think I might have to do a whole other post on what my skincare routine is like at the moment because it’s changed a lot since I last wrote about it.
Once you’ve done your skincare routine (and put sunscreen on, never forget your sunscreen!!), then you can start with your makeup, and this is what I do most days when it comes to my natural everyday makeup routine:
To start with I add a touch of highlighter/illuminator to the high points of my cheeks just to add some extra glowiness into my skin before I even start with my makeup. Right now I’m using the Rituel de Fille Rare Light Luminizer in Ghost Light which to me feels like a creamier version of the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured so if you’re looking for a good natural dupe for your Becca glow I’d highly recommend this product.
I have quite a few freckles and I hate wearing heavy foundation that covers them up because it looks so unnatural and I feel like my skin can’t breathe so I’m a huge fan of BB creams. I’m using the Inika Organics Certified Organic BB Cream in Beige most days and I love it. It’s lightweight and feels good on my skin and gives enough coverage to even out my complexion (but not so heavy that it looks too much). I tend to concentrate it around my nose and chin as those are the areas I need the most coverage and blend it outwards from there.
After squirting one pump of the BB cream onto my fingers I add one or two drops of a facial oil (at the moment I’m using a sample of the Kjaer Weis The Beautiful Oil) into the BB cream and mix it between my fingers before applying it. This is a tip I picked up from Eleanor Pendleton and I like that it adds a bit more glow to my skin.
Next up I’m using RMS Beauty ‘Un’ Cover-Up in shade 22 as my concealer which is in a great little pot, perfect for travel or my handbag. It’s actually quite good as a light coverage foundation as well if you just need some small touch ups. I use a little of this under my eyes to cover my under eye circles and around my nose where I can occasionally get some redness. If I need something a little more heavy duty (depending on how much sleep I’ve had!) I sometimes use the Vapour Illusionist Concealer in shade s020 instead which is just a little more full coverage than the RMS.
I’m loving lip and cheek tints as they provide me with the colour payoff and finish that I love in a cheek colour. My two go-to products right now are the ILIA Beauty Multistick in A Fine Romance which is a gorgeous berry colour, and the RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Smile which is a light, poppy coral/pink. They both are really long lasting, but I’d give the edge to the ILIA Multistick in terms of longevity and colour payoff. These are both also great products for travel because they’re small, fit easily in a handbag and are multi-taskers. The RMS is slightly more drying on the lips than the ILIA but both are quite good.
Then I’m loving to use Tata Harper Very Bronzing as a slight contour or bronzer and then I also give a little swipe of the colour over my eyelids just to add some colour and base for if I’m using an eyeshadow. It’s really easy to blend and is a nice non-shimmery bronze which makes it perfect for either bronzer or contour. I usually add a stripe of the colour under my cheekbones (in the hollows) and blend it out with my fingers.
Then I get my Rituel de Fille Luminizer out again and add some highlight to the high points of my cheeks, my brow bones, cupids bow and just a tiny amount down the bridge of my nose just to add some highlight to my skin and make everything just look glowy and healthy.
Depending on the day or the look I’m going for I may or may not use eyeshadow. I actually really like the slight hint of colour the Very Bronzing gives and will often just leave it at that but if I do want a natural eyeshadow option I love the Lily Lolo palettes. They’re very small and have a lot of really nice neutral shades that are really versatile. For everyday I will almost always go for a neutral bronzy/brown colour.
I’m a big fan of eyeliner, especially if I’m not wearing much eyeshadow. I feel like it suits me and makes me feel a little more ‘done’. At the moment I’m alternating between either the Inika Organic Certified Organic Eyeliner Pencil in Black Caviar or the Jane Iredale liquid eyeliner depending on what look I’m going for. I’m actually a lot better at applying liquid and it is a lot quicker for me than pencil liner (which is a bit weird!) but they give very different looks so it just depends what I’m in the mood for really! I do love the slightly undone, lived-in look of a pencil eyeliner.
I always curl my eyelashes before putting mascara on as it helps to open my eyes up and make my eyelashes look longer. I love the Surratt eyelash curler, it’s amazing at getting all my lashes and creates a really good curl.
Then I follow up with my Kjaer Weis Mascara. I love this mascara for lots of reasons: it’s natural so it doesn’t irritate my eyes at all (and I really notice the difference with irritation when I use a non-natural mascara now!); it gives really good natural looking definition which is something I like in my mascaras; and it doesn’t smudge on me which kind of makes it a holy grail beauty product for me! I also love that it comes in refillable packaging which minimizes waste that usually accompanies the beauty industry and makes my eco-loving beauty heart very happy!
Lipstick is where I like to mix it up most with my makeup routine (and lipstick has always been an area I change it up most often) as I am a huge fan of bold lips but also enjoy the ease of not really wearing much some days. So I will alternate between a light coverage red lipstick or tint like the ILIA Beauty Tinted Lip Conditioner in Bang Bang or the Ere Perez Beautiful Beetroot Cheek and Lip Tint and a bolder lip colour like the Absolution Cosmetics Sweet and Safe Kiss in Bordeaux no 1, Rituel de Fille Forbidden Lipstick in Written in Blood or the Vapour Siren Lipstick in the shade Courage. I’m really loving more vampy colours at the moment because it’s winter but in summer I’ll gravitate more towards more punchy colours.
For days I don’t wear a lip colour or want a very subtle colour in a lip balm I love the Lanolips range, they’re amazing!
So those are the natural beauty products that are making up my everyday makeup routine at the moment. It’s so nice knowing that I’m using good quality products on my face and ones that fit with my interest in pursuing a greener, more natural lifestyle in all things.
This may seem like a lot of steps but it’s a very streamlined process and takes me around 5 minutes to do my makeup most mornings (longer if Grace is running around my legs and distracting me!). The benefit of having a streamlined everyday beauty routine is that it’s super quick to get ready in the morning and you can do it with very little thought. Plus these products don’t take up much room at all so it’s easy to toss them into a makeup bag for when I travel or if I want to be able to touch up my makeup before heading out after work.
I’m really loving this combo of products and I’ve found that this routine is really working well for me.
Do you use natural beauty products? What are your faves? What does your everyday makeup routine look like?
