I’d heard of Lola Berry before but never really looked very far into her work when I saw that she was running a natural beauty masterclass at the Canberra Centre. This obviously immediately appealed to me as if you’ve been following me for a little while (especially on Instagram) you’ll know that I’ve become very interested in natural beauty and natural living more generally.
Well, it’s safe to say that I walked away from the event with a bit of a girl crush on Lola (whose real name is Lauren so you just know that makes her an awesome person haha!). She was one of the most down-to-earth, funny and straight talking people I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to and I’m now a huge fan.
Lola had some amazing insights into wellness and natural beauty that I just loved and really resonated with me way more than I was expecting to! So these are my favourite points from Lola’s masterclass:
On believing in yourself…
Lola said that self-belief is the key to any kind of success. When she was thinking about what she wanted to do with herself as a young adult, she decided that she wanted to be “the Steve Irwin of health”. Lola advocates for taking a risk on yourself and taking gambles. You have to back yourself and dig your heels in against the grain and against people saying you can’t do it. To be successful you also need to have a high tolerance for boredom as you’ll have to repeat the same stuff again and again.
On dropping the guilt…
The biggest thing Lola has learned is to drop the guilt. Everyone falls off the bandwagon sometimes but Lola doesn’t beat herself up about it anymore. Just start the next day or next decision fresh and let go of the guilt. Lola shared that she has a history of emotional and disordered eating but that now she’s realized that if she gives herself permission to not feel guilty about it and remember that the body responds well to different foods. So if you wake up feeling a bit rubbish because you didn’t eat so great yesterday, just eat as healthfully as you can today and your body will do its thing.
The biggest tip Lola gave was to love yourself. Because when you love who you are and you realize that you’re beautiful and awesome and no one looks the same as you, your inner beauty comes out. She’s big on using makeup to enhance and says it should be used to highlight what’s already within you, which I totally love!!
Healthy living also has a huge impact on how you look and incorporating oils and good fats into your diet (and your skincare routine) will make a big difference to how your skin looks (Lola says it will make your skin look phenomenal) plus they taste great! We’re talking about things like salmon, avocado, nut butter and coconut oil here, both in your diet and applied topically through masks.
On her top beauty hacks…
The back of your hands will show your age and they are usually a forgotten part of the body when it comes to skincare. When Lola does a face mask she also puts the mask onto the back of her hands.
Speaking of the back of the hands, she also puts sunscreen/zinc on the backs of the hands when she gets her nails done to stop any damage from the UV lights they use.
Highlighter is the biggest beauty hack Lola has, it’s a non-negotiable for her. It makes your skin look great and adds a bit of brightness to the skin even when you’re not wearing much (or any) other makeup.
Another great tip from Lola was to layer your perfumes, that way no one else will have your scent!
Those are my favourite points from Lola’s masterclass. I really loved it (and Lola even told me how much she loved my hair!) and it was great to listen to someone that I resonated so strongly with.
