I’m a huge fan of Eleanor Pendleton (otherwise known as the face and brains behind Gritty Pretty, one of my fave Australian beauty sites) and when I saw that she was coming to Canberra I just knew I had to go to her event!
Last week the Canberra Centre unveiled their brand new beauty and wellness precinct and as part of their opening celebrations, they’re having all kinds of events, including this minimalist beauty masterclass with Eleanor. (As a side note, the new precinct is amazing – I love that Canberra is stepping up its game with areas like this!)
So I thought I would share with you a few of my favourite points Eleanor shared in her beauty philosophy and how to get the perfect glowy minimalist beauty look she’s so well known for.
Eleanor’s biggest tip for well-being was to find what works for you, and I couldn’t agree more. She personally does Yoga and Reformer Pilates and meditates when she can. She also treats her skincare routine as ‘me time’, which I love! I’m a big fan of skincare routines and I love the idea of viewing it as ‘me time’. It would definitely make you prioritise it if you had a hard time getting into the routine of washing your face morning and night.
The biggest point on makeup was one I’ve heard a lot but sometimes doesn’t always sink in: use makeup to enhance what you naturally have. Eleanor said “you’re features are naturally you, no one else looks like you. Use cosmetics to make yourself feel more beautiful, not to cover up insecurities.”
I love this approach, and it’s one that I definitely take with my makeup now but that wasn’t always the case!
On how to get glowy skin…
Illuminator/illuminisor/highlighter (pick your word of choice) is the powerhouse product in getting glowy skin. Eleanor uses it as a primer (before foundation) on the high points of the face to create a glow to the skin before using foundation. This is something I’d never really thought to do before but I’ve been doing it since last weekend and I love it! It’s best to use a liquid or cream highlighter for this.
Another great tip Eleanor mentioned for getting glowy skin is to add a drop of facial oil into your foundation (on your fingertips or the back of your hand) before you apply it. Another tip I’d not really considered and another one I totally love. I have quite an oily t-zone but I am all about facial oils! They actually even out my skin way more than anything else so don’t be scared of oils if you have oily skin.
On the perfect smoky eye…
The more imperfect you are with your application, the better it looks. Which takes the pressure off!! You’ll need a soft, feathered brush with a flared out end (best to ask at a makeup counter if you’re not sure what kind of brush you should use) and use a light and quick ‘windscreen wiper’ motion with the eyeshadow across the lid. Eleanor is a fan of brown smoky eyes over black which can be too harsh on a lot of people. And don’t forget your eyebrows when you’re wearing eyeshadow to properly frame your face.
Those are some of my favourite tips from Eleanor’s masterclass! It was so great to get to hear her speak and meet her afterwards. She was just lovely and so gorgeous in person!
I also went to another masterclass over the weekend on natural beauty with Lola Berry so keep your eyes out for my recap of that one too!
