I can hardly believe that it is the start of July (and I’m into my Plastic Free July experiment and my ‘buy nothing new’ experiment and my I Quit Sugar experiment – wow July is going to be big)! I’ve started to simplify and make the swap to natural when it comes to my beauty products and that is definitely reflected in this months’ favourites. I’m loving incorporating natural beauty products into my life, as well as some sustainably made clothes, and an old hobby I’ve picked up again.
Enjoy my June Favourites, I hope you find some great product inspiration this month! I know that I am absolutely loving every single favourite this month and I hope you do too.
I bought this ILIA Multistick in A Fine Romance after seeing that it was one of the products that Emma Watson used on her Beauty and the Beast press tour (I may have stalked her @the_press_tour Instagram account to get all her natural beauty recommendations for products that she used during the tour – let me know if would like a blog post on this!). I looove this product, it’s like a natural version of the NARS Multiple. The application is creamy and smooth and it’s good for both cheeks and lips (I find that some products like this are too drying for lips but this one is perfect). One of my favourite things about this product is the colour, it’s a deep burgundy colour that creates the perfect berry coloured flush on the cheeks and rosy tint to my lips that manages to look gorgeously natural. I’ve been using it almost every day since I got it! Plus I love a multitasking product (and it would be perfect to pack for a weekend away or a holiday).
Another great multitasking product that I’ve been loving lately is rms beauty ‘Un’ Cover-Up (I have it in shade 22). It’s a great concealer and can also be used as a light coverage foundation (which is how Emma Watson used it on her press tour). It’s really easy to blend using just my fingers which makes it really convenient to throw in my handbag for touchups (or for the occasions I find myself needing to do my makeup in the car). It’s also perfect for travel as it’s small, compact and a good multipurpose product. It’s quite a lightweight formula but I find that it does quite an effective job of covering my dark circles. When I feel like I need something a little more heavy duty I use ‘Un’ Cover-Up as a base and then a fuller coverage concealer over the top.
I have finally found a natural mascara that doesn’t smudge! I have tried a couple of different mascaras in my quest to switch to more natural products but I would always end up with mascara smudged under my eyes in no time. I don’t love having to constantly check my makeup in a mirror so I can’t deal with smudgy mascara. I bought the Kjaer Weis Mascara last month and it absolutely blew me away. I couldn’t believe that I had finally found a natural mascara that I could wear all day without having to wipe black smudges from under my eyes! It’s a really lovely formula and doesn’t flake or smudge and the pigment is great. It is on the small side but it’s a great quality product and Kjaer Weis products all come with refillable metal containers, so when this mascara runs out I just need to order a refill (packaged in cardboard) and slot it in. This cuts down massively on the amount of waste which is a huge win in my eyes. Definitely give it a try if you’re looking for a non-smudgy natural mascara.
I’m also really loving this Inika Organics Baked Mineral Illuminisor, it’s such a gorgeously glowy powder and is perfect for adding a beautiful highlight to the skin. It’s really easy to apply with the Inika Kabuki brush (just with the outside edge). I really like powder highlighters although they can sometimes sit a bit unnaturally on the skin, but this one adds a really nice ‘lit from within’ glow that is definitely my preference when it comes to highlighters.
I’m starting to want to make more sustainable and long-term investments in my wardrobe (although now I’m on a pseudo shopping ban with my ‘buy nothing new’ experiment) and these silk shirts from The Fable fit the bill exactly. I love silk shirts (they’re perfect for work as well as with jeans and boots for a more casual weekend look) but they can be a bit high maintenance. These ones are sustainably and ethically made (the brand rate as ‘good’ in the Good On You app) and have some beautiful colours and prints. They just make silk shirts so they have put all their effort into perfecting this one product. The dyes used in the shirts are natural vegetable based dyes so no nasty chemicals in the shirts or in the run-off from the dying process creating environmental issues. I picked up the ‘Dalmatian’ and ‘Polka Dot’ shirts, and the package comes with fabric samples of their other colours so you can see how they look in real life if you want to order more. They look fantastic on and I highly recommend these shirts!
I’ve been reaching for these adorable SOPHiE flats from FRANKiE4 in the cutest black spot print a lot lately. I find they add something a bit different to my outfits, especially when I’m all bundled up to leave the house and I get compliments on them every single time I wear them. I love how easy they are to slip on and off and how they go with just about everything! They’re amazingly comfortable (like all my FRANKiE’s) and I’m loving having another versatile flat in my collection.
My absolute favourite thing I’ve watched this month has to be Wonder Woman which was so great I saw it twice! Gal Gadot is incredible (and gorgeous) in this film and it was so awesome watching a woman kick some ass. I loved that the romance subplot was minor and was just a kiss, nothing more seen on screen – I feel that some action movies have too much unnecessary romance. Diana was a totally amazing fleshed out character and I was so excited to learn that it was also directed by a woman! I don’t typically like DC Comic films (I much prefer Marvel) but this has to be my favourite movie (superhero or otherwise) that I’ve seen in recent times. Definitely go see it if you haven’t already!!
While I was sick over the course of June I spent a lot of time on the couch binge watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix. It’s one of my all time favourite shows and I love rewatching shows, especially when I’m feeling unwell or doing incredibly boring housework (ironing, I’m looking at you). I don’t usually like watching new things when I can’t watch them properly (like when I’m sick) so I basically like having something on as background noise so I can relax. Am I the only one who does this?
I picked up an old hobby over the last month with starting to cross stitch again. I used to do it all the time and I love it, it’s really relaxing and is perfect for keeping my hands occupied so I don’t pick up my phone constantly! I bought some patterns from an Etsy store (Stitchy Little Fox) and started with this awesome ‘you badass you’ pattern. I loved starting a new (old) hobby and having this gorgeous pattern to keep me busy. I was so proud when I finished it and I’m planning on framing it and hanging it somewhere in my new home (whenever I finally move!).
Something I bought recently that is helping cut down on food waste for me is The Swag produce bags. I was a little sceptical at first but I was intrigued enough to buy a starter pack to try them out and I’m hooked. They work by allowing the vegetables to still breathe and keeps them in a damp condition that helps to keep them fresh. I’ve had baby spinach and rocket in one of the bags that was still fresh after a week and a cut avocado that didn’t go brown overnight in the fridge (and if you’ve ever had a cut avocado around you would know that they go brown in about 10 seconds usually!). I like that the bags are colour coded so I know what is in each and that it keeps my Farmers Market produce fresh for well over a week reducing on the amount of food waste by throwing out spoiled food. It also means I can be sure that when I do all my food shopping on Saturdays that I know the produce will last the week (or longer). It’s a great way to reduce the amount of plastic around my house and my fridge, and means I get to enjoy my delicious Farmers Market produce all week.
As you might know, I’ve been sick on and off for the last month with the flu and a nasty cough. I’ve been trying to find a natural version of Vicks VapoRub (which has petroleum jelly in it, a by-product of the oil refining industry) and I came across Simple As That Vapour Balm which is perfect. The eucalyptus scent is strong but not overwhelming and it rubs in really well. I’m so glad that I found a great vapour balm that is made of natural products and is going to be gentle enough for me to use on Grace as well.
Another lovely scent based treatment I’ve been using lately is the Flora Remedia Let Go Perfume. It’s a rollerball of essential oils and plant extracts that are particularly designed for different emotional states. There is also an Immunity and an Uplifting perfume that I’m dying to try, but this one is fantastic for just easing my mind a little and helping me to destress and bring back some calm when I’m starting to feel a bit overwhelmed.
Those are my favourites for the month of June! What have you been loving in the last month?
