I had a less than great day at work yesterday. Nothing to do with my actual job (which I love) but more to do with people being difficult and making me feel bad for doing my job. It actually made me feel really bad about myself and really got to me.
Sometimes people suck. But moving on.
To make myself feel better about my average day (after having a bit of a vent to my husband – there may have been some princess tears) I did some things just for me:
1. Large glass of red wine
Sometimes a glass of wine is a need after a long, hard day at work. Even just the mental cue of unwinding with a glass of wine is helpful to move on from the frustrations of the day.
My mum took me shopping as my birthday present on Saturday and bought me some lovely new clothes, and these Peter Alexander Star Wars pj’s that I am absolutely loving.
Today I turned 27 and I’ve had a great day celebrating with my family (more on what we did for my birthday soon), and it’s got me thinking about things I have done in the last year and things I want to achieve before my next birthday (plus, I love any excuse to write a list).
This has been a pretty big 12 months for me: I got married, celebrated 1 year at a job I love, and travelled to Europe (a lifelong dream of mine).
I’ve settled on 28 things, because 28 things to do before I turn 28 has a nice ring to it, plus it’s a convenient number to aim for!
So here are the 28 things I want to do in the next 365 days (in no particular order):
1: Continue exercising regularly and looking after my body – self explanatory really. I’ve always struggled to make exercise a priority and a regular part of my life – this is the year. Still loving Xtend Barre!
2: Celebrate one year of writing my blog – I can sometimes lose momentum on things like this so it is my aim to keep at it and not lose focus!
I still haven’t sorted out my photos from our trip to Europe. We’ve been home for 2 months now and I just haven’t been bothered to do it. (I did cull a lot of photos while we were over there and put a fair few photos on Facebook though so I feel like that makes it a bit better).
I really should sort out my travel photos and I figured that while I commence sorting through them I would write some posts on where we went, what we saw and share some photos from our time away.
This was my ‘lifelong dream’ trip. I have wanted to go to Europe for as long as I can remember. It was just always something I had to do. And because I’m
a massive dork super cool, I wanted to go to lots of museums and other ‘boring places’ which narrowed the field of who I could go to Europe with. Friends are understanding, but not necessarily that understanding for an extended overseas trip.
My favourite weekends are the ones where I just get to stay home all weekend and do not much.
I’m generally pretty productive on Saturday mornings. I go to the farmers market, an Xtend Barre class and then go to brunch with my husband. After that, unless we have something on, it is homebound for us.
I especially love rainy Sundays where we just do nothing much. Perfect movie or tv show weather (we started The White Queen today which I bought on a whim, it’s pretty good so far).
So today, I’ve just caught up on blogs, watched some episodes of The White Queen and made a goulash, a lasagna and some apple, berry and rhubarb crumble. Cooking is pretty much my only productive activity on a Sunday, and I like it that way.
I’m off now to watch some more episodes and eat some crumble!
How do you like to spend rainy Sundays?
I’ve never been great with regular exercise. I tend to get bored and lose motivation when I don’t love it and don’t see results. People who are runners tell me I need to give running time to really love it, but honestly, I don’t have the patience to wait to love exercise. It kind of needs to be something I can at least tolerate, if not love, from the first go or I’m likely to not last too long with it. I’m definitely not a runner!
After coming back from Europe and eating my weight in gelato and pizza, I decided to give Xtend Barre a go. I had heard about this hybrid ballet/pilates workout before so I was so excited when a studio finally opened in Canberra and I could try it out for myself. I knew it was supposed to be a really good workout and was very keen to give it a go. I did ballroom dancing when I was younger and I really love dancing so I thought this would be a good fit.
A bit over a month ago, I finally had the time/inclination/opportunity to try it out. After the first class I was hooked. I was exhausted and sore but felt so good about myself for doing it and it was so much fun. I pretty much immediately signed up for a membership and have been going 3-5 times a week ever since.
I made my first ever crumble last Monday night. It was also my first time ever cooking with rhubarb (also the first time I think I’ve ever actually eaten rhubarb!). I saw all the rhubarb at the farmers market on the weekend and thought I should give rhubarb a try. I decided to make a crumble, it’s such a delicious winter dessert (and I hoped it would be pretty straightforward).
- one bunch of rhubarb, roughly chopped
- two apples, chopped (I use Rosy Glow – a red variety they sell at my local farmers market)
- a packet of frozen berries (about 300g)
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of plain flour
- 1/2 cup of rolled oats
- 60g butter, chopped
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (I don’t really ever measure out herbs and spices, so I’m guessing here)
Pour the apple, rhubarb and berry mixture either into a casserole dish or individual ramekins and top with the crumble mixture.
In our home we have three spare rooms which all have the same paint job from the previous owners. I really am not a fan of the colours and have wanted to paint these rooms since we moved in 18 months ago. Looking at the rooms I’m sure you’ll agree with me on the paint job! As we don’t actually use these rooms all that much this has been put on the backburner as we’ve had other things to do but now that we are home for a while I really want to tackle these rooms.
They are in various states of use at the moment – excuse the terrible photos and mess! As I mentioned, we’ve had other things to do around the house so these aren’t the tidiest or most organised rooms – but they will be! I have also realised how hard these rooms are to photograph due to the layout!
The first room, which opens out onto our family room and kitchen area is set up as a playroom. Even though we don’t have kids yet we do have nieces and nephews so we decided to use this room as a playroom. There is a lounge and a TV in there as well as a cupboard full of board games and Nerf guns. I have massive plans for this room involving this white Ikea daybed and an
Expedit Lappland TV unit with shelves, but I’m saving up to redo the room (it’s third on the list after a paint job, and some outdoor furniture for our back deck). We want to keep this as a playroom to give our nieces and nephews somewhere to play when they come over (and so they don’t commandeer the TV in the living room so the adults can still have adult time), as well as hopefully being a place for our own kids to play one day.
We have a guest room, which is pretty spartan with a queen size bed and bedside table. I have an antique dresser which I want to bring into the guest room (currently stored at my parents place in Sydney) as well as plans to add some art to the walls. I’m actually planning on switching the furniture in this room with the third room as the third is closest to the main bathroom and further from the living area which we think will be better for guests when staying with us. The way the bedspread clashes with the walls drives me crazy at the moment – hence why I am desperate to paint!
The third room is currently used as a drying room for all our washing in winter plus a place to store all my sewing stuff (please excuse the clothes in there!! Keeping it real here people). Another reason I want to switch this room with the guest bedroom is so we can turn the second room into a nursery at some point so I want to completely clear this third room out and relocate my sewing supplies to our study so I can move the guest bedroom furniture in here and leave the second room empty to transform it into a nursery one day.
I also found that although I had a whole room where I could sew, I didn’t really use it that much. I prefer to do my sewing on the dining room table where I can still be in the same room as my husband while he plays the PS4 or watches some TV. We actually don’t like spending time in different parts of the house so it’s quite common for me to be sitting on the couch with the laptop or iPad catching up on blogs while he plays on the PS4 or on his iPad next to me. Yes, we’re that couple!
I really want to paint all three rooms the same colour to save on money and effort, as well as give this end of the house a similar feel, so we want to stick to a neutral colour. The husband wanted a ‘pancake’ colour (apparently the colour he painted his bedroom growing up!) but I’m thinking a nice light grey or greige colour as it needs to be able to suit a guest bedroom, kids playroom and nursery and I feel like grey is a lot more of a versatile neutral than beige. I’ve been doing the Fox in Flats Style Dare this month (if you don’t know what this is, head over here and check out all the details) and today’s challenge was ‘in-jeanious’. Initially I thought no way am I wearing jeans to work. I’m an Executive Assistant for an agency head in the public service so I need to look professional (and relatively corporate) at work. I did end up wearing my jeans to work today though, so I thought I would give you a quick post on how to wear jeans to work and still look professional (and please excuse the iPhone photos!).
